John restoring original woodwork in a historic home

Boise, Idaho

Historic home restoration

Craftsman, Victorian, and early century homes restored with period correct trim, doors, windows, and woodwork that preserve their character.

How John Approaches Historic home restoration

Historic homes are full of details that are hard to replace: hand profiled casings, solid wood doors, wavy glass windows, built in cabinetry, and stair parts turned decades ago. Most contractors replace what they cannot match. John matches it.

A third generation New England carpenter, John has spent roughly four decades restoring older homes, including houses more than 200 years old brought back after fire damage so it looks as though the fire never happened. He has also worked on an LDS temple, where precision is expected in every joint. In Boise, that experience serves the Craftsman bungalows and Victorian homes of the North End, the East End, and older neighborhoods throughout the Treasure Valley.

Problems We Solve

  • Original trim that is damaged, missing, or replaced with mismatched modern molding
  • Antique doors and windows that stick, rattle, or have rotted sections
  • Past remodels that stripped away the home's original character
  • Fire, water, or settling damage in an older house
  • Uncertainty about what can be saved and what must be replaced

What the Work Can Include

  • Period correct trim, casing, baseboard, and crown, custom milled to match
  • Antique door restoration, including 1930s and older solid wood doors
  • Historic window and sash repair
  • Staircase, baluster, and wainscoting restoration
  • Fire damage restoration in older homes
  • Additions and remodels detailed to match the original house

Our Process, Step by Step

  1. 1

    Document the original

John records existing profiles, joinery, and materials before anything is removed, so the home's character guides every decision.

  2. 2

    Save what can be saved

Original material is repaired and consolidated wherever possible, because old growth wood and period craftsmanship cannot be bought new.

  3. 3

    Mill what is missing

Missing or damaged pieces are reproduced in the workshop to match the original profile, species, and proportions.

  4. 4

    Blend old and new

Repairs and new work are fitted and finished so the transition between original and restored material disappears.

Period Correct, Not Period Inspired

Craftsman casings, Victorian moldings, and early century doors each have their own proportions. Reproducing them accurately is what separates a restoration from a remodel with old style trim.

A Plan That Fits the House and the Budget

Not every original element needs the same level of work. John helps you set priorities so the details that define the home are preserved within a budget you are comfortable with.

Getting Started in Boise and the Treasure Valley

John provides historic home restoration for homeowners throughout Boise, from the North End and East End to West Boise and the Bench, as well as Garden City, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, Star, Nampa, Caldwell, and Middleton. The first step is a conversation: call John, describe what you are seeing or what you would like to change, and he will arrange a visit to look at the project in person.

During that visit he will explain what he finds, answer your questions, and outline a plan for historic home restoration that fits a budget you are comfortable with. Many projects also connect naturally with historic door restoration, custom window trim, interior woodwork repair, so John can tell you whether combining work makes sense for your home.
